Prevent · Hygiene & Guided Biofilm Therapy

A cleaning built to be gentler.

We don't do scrape-first cleanings. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) uses warm water, air, and an ultra-fine powder to gently lift away the invisible bacterial film behind cavities and gum disease.

Three intraoral photographs of the same patient at one hygiene visit: before cleaning, after a disclosing solution has stained the biofilm purple, and after Guided Biofilm Therapy.

One visit, three steps: disclose, remove, review — one patient treated at our office. Results vary.

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

GBT reveals the film on your teeth first, then removes it gently — no scrape-first routine.

Why biofilm matters

Biofilm is the soft, nearly invisible bacterial layer that re-forms on teeth every day. It's the true starting point of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

How GBT removes it

A harmless disclosing dye makes the biofilm visible — you'll see exactly what we see.

The AIRFLOW® handpiece then washes it away with warm water, air, and a slightly sweet, ultra-fine powder. It reaches between teeth, along the gumline, and around implants where brushes and scrapers can't.

Comfortable — even for sensitive teeth
Warm water and a feather-light spray instead of cold scraping.
Into the tight spaces
The powder stream reaches gently between teeth and around implants.
Gentle on implants, veneers & Invisalign attachments
Gentle on restorations and attachments alike.
You see the before and after
The disclosing step turns your visit into a lesson you can use at home.
Protective, not abrasive
Scalers come out only where truly needed, after the biofilm is gone.

Nervous about the dentist in general, not just cleanings? Start here — your first visit can be only a conversation.

Some patients also wear a Perio Protect® tray at home between visits, as one more piece of the plan. How the tray fits in.

Common questions

Does it hurt?
The powder spray is fine and low-pressure, so most people find it gentler than scraping — especially with sensitive teeth. Tell us if anything stings and we'll adjust.
What is the powder?
An ultra-fine erythritol powder — low-abrasion and gentle on enamel and restorations.
Do you still remove tartar?
Yes, wherever it's present — precisely, and only after the biofilm is gone.
Is it safe around implants?
Yes. The gentle spray suits restorations and attachments, and it's often used for implant maintenance.
How often should I come in?
We set your recall to your chart, not a template — some mouths need a shorter rhythm.
